Replacement of Complete duct system only Pursuant to sections 705 and 704.2 of the Local Amendments to the 2015 International Property Maintenance Code smoke alarms and in most cases carbon monoxide detectors are required for all permits applied for after June 1 2018. The smoke alarms are required in and outside of each sleeping room and on each level of all dwelling units. If the dwelling unit contains a fuel burning appliance or has an attached garage a carbon monoxide detector is required outside of each sleeping room as well for this application the City of Austin recommends the use a combination smoke and carbon monoxide alarm. A smoke alarm or carbon monoxide detector may be solely battery operated if at the time of construction the existing structure did not require hard wired interconnected smoke alarms and/or carbon monoxide detectors or any reconstruction alteration or repairs that would not require these devices as for new construction.
