The smoke alarms are required in and outside of each sleeping room and on each level of all dwelling units. If the dwelling unit contains a fuel burning appliance or has an attached garage a carbon monoxide detector is required outside of each sleeping room as well for this application the City of Austin recommends the use a combination smoke and carbon monoxide alarm. A smoke alarm or carbon monoxide detector may be solely battery operated if at the time of construction the existing structure did not require hard wired interconnected smoke alarms and/or carbon monoxide detectors or any reconstruction alteration or repairs that would not require these devices as for new construction.
